Upon invitation by the Association\u2019s management, Dr Ilonka Koleva, Head of the \u2018University Archives\u2019 Department, presented the exhibition and spoke about the history of women\u2019s higher education in Bulgaria and the difficult path they faced in order to advance academically and earn leadership positions at the University. In her lecture, Dr Koleva highlighted the social background of the first female students and their subsequent professional development. The stories of the first female assistants and lecturers who dared to enter the entirely male-dominated academic environment, along with the biographies of two foreign lecturers \u2013 Zhang Sun-Feng-Kaneti and Mercia MacDermott \u2013 were met with widespread interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/libsu.uni-sofia.bg\/UB\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/%D0%98%D0%B7%D0%BB%D0%BE%D0%B6%D0%B1%D0%B0-%D0%9F%D1%8A%D1%80%D0%B2%D0%B8%D1%82%D0%B5-%D0%B6%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%B8-%D0%B2-%D0%A1%D0%A3-11-1024x460.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9862\" style=\"aspect-ratio:2.226086956521739;width:1024px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exhibition has been organised by the Cultural Centre of Sofia University, the \u2018University Archives\u2019 Department and the University Library to mark the 125th anniversary of the enrollment of the first female students at Sofia University, and is scheduled to be displayed at the regional libraries in Ruse and Stara Zagora.
