Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski“ presents the exhibition ”The Bulgarian Alphabet Books”. It traces the development of the alphabet books from the Bulgarian Revival to the end of the 20th century.
Through the alphabet books, bulgarian children not only learn the letters and discover the world, but also cultivate a variety of values – from respect for elders and peers to developing work habits. The different editions of the alphabet books allow us to trace the gradual change from religious to secular education, the changing values and perceptions of the world. They are a vivid illustration of the development of pedagogical approaches to both the process of learning the alphabet and the educational methods and corresponding demands on pupils. The artistic depictions in the alphabet books, which are often the work of well-known bulgarian artists, reflect the lifestyle and surrounding world of the bulgarians at the given period.

The exhibition “The Bulgarian Alphabet Books” is organized collaboratively by the University Library, the Faculty of Slavic Studies, the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology and the Department of Information and Public Relations. It is dedicated to the 1170th anniversary of the Bulgarian alphabet, and can be visited in the period 23.05.2025 – 05.06.2025 in the open-air Gallery in the City Garden in front of the National Theatre “Ivan Vazov”.
