The French Library was established in 1963. Within the framework of a cultural agreement between Bulgaria and France in 1966, it unites the collections of Alliance Francaise and the French Institute. In 1990 the French Library became part of the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology at Sofia University. Since 2011 it is a branch library within the University Library Network.

The library collections are acquired primarily through donations and book exchange. Now they are over 38,400 volumes of books, serials and reference editions. Prevailing genre is fiction, divided into periods (Middle Ages, XV-XIX century, contemporary writers). The collection of literary criticism of French writers from the Middle Ages till present is unique in Bulgaria, as well as the collection of Francophone literature (Belgian, Canadian, Swiss). The library has 22 reading places, including 7 computerized workstations.
