The library was established in 1984 on the basis of a small library collection at the Department of Oriental Studies and books from the Philological Library to meet user demand of students from the “Turkic and Altaic Studies”, “Arabic and Semitic Studies”, “Classical East Studies”, “Japanese Studies”, “Chinese Studies”, “Korean Studies” and the Center for Eastern Languages and Cultures to the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology. 

The Eastern Studies Library has unique collections.
They contain of more than 93,300 volumes (special editions and fiction, serials, maps and atlases audio-visual records and other e-resources) in more than 50 languages about literature, history, language, religion, architecture and culture of the countries of the East. The library regularly receives donations from Bulgarian and foreign scientists as well as embassies of countries whose official languages are taught in the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology. It has 30 reading places (General Reading Room – 20; Japanese Studies Reading Room – 10), including 1 computerized workstation.
