The Supreme Poet and His Bulgarian Translators

The University Library concludes its cultural program for the 2021 with an exhibition dedicated to the 700th anniversary of the death of the Italian poet, philosopher and thinker Dante Alighieri. The exhibition focus is the translation of his poems by Ivan Vazov, Konstantin Velichkov, Kiril Hristov, Nikolay Liliev, Milko Ralchev, Nikolay Vranchev, Hristina Stoyanova, Ivan Ivanov, Lyuben Lyubenov and others Bulgarian translators.

The oldest and newest editions of the “Divine Comedy” from the University library collections are exhibited; books of Prof. Boyan Penev’s and Mara Belcheva’s private libraries, and notable scholarship of Sofia University faculty, from the mid-twentieth century to present days, are shown. Volumes of the first editions, with dedications and translators’ signatures, critical reviews of Dante’s poems, facsimile editions, and bibliographies among others stand out. The exhibited selection of books presents a complete list of all interpretations of one of the most important literary masterpieces in Bulgaria.

The exhibition will be on view until February 20, 2022.
