The library was established in 1923, together with the Faculty of Theology. After 1951, when the Faculty of Theology was set apart from the structure of Sofia University and transformed into a Theological Academy, the library functioned under the guidance of the Holy Synod. In 1992, after the re-establishment of the Faculty of Theology, the library became a branch library of Sofia University Library.
Today the library collections contain over 85,200 library items (books, serials, icons, music scores, CDs, DVDs, audio and video tapes) in the field of theology, philosophy and history. It stores a rich collection of rare and valuable books – old printed Bulgarian, Russian, Serbian and Greek books, serials from the period of the Bulgarian National Revival, rare editions of the Old and New Testaments in various languages and other valuable editions. It also stores donated private libraries of eminent scholars in the field of theology – Bulgarian Exarch Joseph I, Patriarch Cyril of Bulgaria, Archpriest Prof. Stefan Tsankov, Prof. Vasil Pandurski, Protoiereus Ivan Goshev, Prof. Gancho Pashev and others.
The library has 60 reading places, including 2 computerized workstations. Since 1998 within the Theology Library’s premises functions the Biblical Studies Reading Room – a joint project of the Faculty of Theology and the Society for New Testament Studies (SNTS).
