The Geological Library was established in 1899 by the first Bulgarian geologist – Prof. Georgi Zlatarski. He organized the transfer of literature in geology from the National Library and the Ministry of Commerce to Sofia University with a royal decree. The library collections gradually grew in size and now include donated private libraries of Prof. Georgi Zlatarski, Prof. Stefan Bonchev, Prof. Peter Bakalov and other prominent Bulgarian geologists.
Today the library maintains the richest library collection on the Balkans in General Geology, Tectonics, Palaeontology, Stratigraphy, Coal, Oil and Natural Gas. Its collections consist of more than 44,600 volumes of books, serials, maps, atlases etc. It has 6 reading places, including 1 computerized workstation.
