Exhibition: "Literary Monuments in the Collections of the University Library"

knij.pametnici_thumb.jpgOn 29 October 2008 in the Lobby of the University Library “St. Kliment Ohridski” was presented the Jubilee exhibition “Literary Monuments in the Collections of the University Library”. The exposition was opened by Mrs. Anna Angelova, Director of the University Library with a speech that traced the 120-year-old history of the first University Library in Bulgaria and gave information about the displayed unique literary monuments. 

knij.pametnici_plakat_1.jpgThe event to celebrate the 120 anniversary of the University Library was attended by the Rector of Sofia University Prof. Ivan Ilchev, who gave a speech on the contribution and importance of the University Library for the University of Sofia. It was also attended by: Assoc. Prof. Zhelyu Vladimirov and Assoc. Prof. Nedyalka Videva, vice-rectors of Sofia University; Mrs. Yordanka Fandakova – Deputy Mayor of Sofia Municipality, Prof. Boryana Hristova – director of Cyril and Methodius National Library; Igor Chipev from the Ministry of Culture; Assoc. Prof. Elena Pavlovska – Representation of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Bulgaria; Vanya Grashkina – Chairman of the Bulgarian Library and Information Association; Sabina Aneva – Deputy Director of the BAS library; Prof. Alexander Fedotov – Director of the the Centre for Eastern Languages and Studies; Assoc. Prof. Alexander Dimchev – Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, as well as by many other faculty members, colleagues, students and book lovers. 
knij.pametnici_snimka_tekst_2.jpgThe main accent of the exhibition are unique rare Bulgarian and foreign scientific and bibliographical editions, among them the First Printed Edition of Archimedes, published in 1544 – the oldest mathematics book in Bulgaria; Mercator’s collection of maps (atlas) from 1607, Nicolas Sanson (1650) and Robert (1754); History and Monuments of Byzantine Enamel, published in 1892; Italian bibliographical editions “Bronze Series”; Bulgarian old-printed publications (Bulgarica collection); “Sluzhebnik”, printed in Venice in 1519; “Nedelnik” of Sofroniy Vrachanski from 1806; “Balgarska gramatika” of Neofit Rilski from 1835 with handwritten additions and edition of collected poems by Ivan Vazov with notes from Prof. Ivan Shishmanov.
knij.pametnici_snimka_tekst_3.jpgThe exhibits also include unique documents from the first years of the existence of the University Library – the first Book Inventory, List of Loaned Items, Library’s Wish List as well as manuscripts of Acad. Lyubomir Miletich – first librarian (1889-1896) and Stoyan Argirov – the first and long-standing University Library Director (1898-1936).
