Official presentation of the expanded Zographou Electronic Research Library


On May 19, 2015 in the Philological Library was held the official presentation of the expanded Zographou Electronic Research Library, consisting of over 470 digitized copies of Slavic manuscripts, maintained in prestigious collections in Bulgaria and abroad. The implementation of the initiative is a result of the research work of our colleagues from the Department of Cyril and Methodius Studies and the cooperation of the University Library “St. Kliment Ohridski” with various Bulgarian and foreign cultural institutions.

zograf_tekst_2_1.jpgThe event was attended by Prof. Ivan Ilchev, Dr. Habil. – Rector of Sofia University, Prof. Panayot Karagyozov, Dr. Habil. – Dean of the Faculty of Slavic Studies, Assoc. Prof. Aleksandar Omarchevski, PhD. - Dean of the Faculty of Theology, Assoc. Prof. Martin Ivanov - Secretary to the President of the Republic of Bulgaria for culture, education and National Identity, Mr. Dimitar Minev, Director of Ivan Vazov National Library – Plovdiv, Mrs. Nina Vutova from the National History Museum, colleagues from St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library, the University Library, the Scientific Archive and the Institute of Literature to the BAS, representatives of NALIS and America for Bulgaria foundations, the Sofia Bishopric, Zographou monastic brotherhood, colleagues from different specialties of Alma Mater and others.

zograf_tekst_3_1.jpgThe event was opened by Assoc. Prof. Anna Angelova, director of the University Library. In her speech she talked about the short but rich history of the digital library, which gained new dimensions in 11 months. Its foundations were laid in June 2014 with the foundation of Zographou Electronic Library containing digital copies of 286 Slavic manuscripts from Zographou Monastery, including the most famous manuscript of Saint Paisius of Hilendar “Slavonic-Bulgarian History” of 1762 (№ 43 - Zographou draft). It was enriched with digital copies of manuscript collections of the Vatican Apostolic Library, the Library of Reims (France), the Centre for Slavo-Byzantine Studies “Prof. Ivan Duychev”, Ivan Vazov National Library – Plovdiv, the Regional Historical Museum “Acad. Yordan Ivanov”- Kyustendil and the Theological branch library of the University Library. Thus researchers is given access to famous manuscripts Codex Assemanius, Manasses Chronicle, Reims Gospel and others. Assoc. Prof. Anna Angelova stressed that the basis of this rapid development lies in the joint efforts of researchers and librarians from various institutions, pointing the special contribution of the colleagues from the Department of Cyril and Methodius Studies. At the end of her speech she wished that the celebration of the next May 24 coincide with the addition of new Slavic manuscript collections.

zograf_tekst_5_1.jpgThe Rector Prof. Ilchev greeted the University Library and the colleagues from the institutions involved in the expansion of the digital library. In his speech he stressed the role and importance of the expanded Zographou Library for research activities on the preservation and study of the written cultural and historical heritage. The representative of Zographou monastery Father Kozma saluted the participants in the event. He stressed that the monastic brotherhood continues to work on the expansion of the Zographou Electronic Research Library - new 220 Zographou monastery manuscripts are prepared and contracts are signed with libraries of other Athos monasteries for digitization of their Slavic manuscripts.

zograf_tekst_6_1.jpgThe newly acquired Slavic manuscripts were presented by: Prof. Anna-Maria Totomanova, Dr. Habil., Head of the Department of Cyril and Methodius Studies to the Faculty of Slavic Studies, who spoke about the work on the projects related to the digital archive “Bulgarian Manuscript Book”; Assoc. Prof. Hristina Tontcheva - Todorova from the Department of General Linguistics and History of Bulgarian language at the University of Plovdiv presented the manuscript collection of the Ivan Vazov National Library; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vasya Velinova, director of the Centre for Slavo-Byzantine Studies “Prof. Ivan Duychev” officially handed to the dean of the Faculty of Theology the restored manuscripts from the personal library of His Holiness Patriarch Cyril of Bulgaria, property of Theological Library.

The event ended with donation to the University Library by the heirs of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dincho Krastev, former director of NALIS Foundation, of Mount Athos collection of his personal library consisting of 80 books.
